Trans advocates demand charges dropped after dozens of Pride weekend arrests

Advocates for the LGBTQ+ community rallied at San Francisco City Hall Monday demanding that the city drop charges against those arrested at Pride events last month.

Police made dozens of arrests at the Trans March and Stud Alley event during Pride weekend on charges including unlawful assembly, vandalism and resisting arrest. 

Rosa Astra is an organizer with the Trans March. She said the situations were escalated by police.

“Continuing to prosecute these charges after this horrific instance of police brutality against our entire community does nothing to advance community safety,” Astra said. “And in fact, it only sends the message that we cannot rely on the city institutions to keep trans people safe."

Mayor Daniel Lurie's Office said it's invited trans community leaders and city officials to meet to discuss how to improve safety at future events.
