SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY Walk, run, or roll... any way works for this event.

Both tennis shoes and wheels heated up the ground Saturday, as dozens of people competed in the 5K Walk, Run, and Roll at San Francisco State University.

Organized by SF State's Campus Recreation Group, this race marks their 11th year of hosting this annual event.

Campus Recreation staff member Sachi Sakamoto says this is an event for the community to come together in an inclusive way.

"There's students that come, but then I also see families come," said Sakamoto. "I like that we have the different walk, run, or roll. That kind of opens it up to more people, not just runners."

Vanessa Campos, a competitor in the walking group, is a former cross-country runner. She says she hopes to get back into the active routine through 5k events.

"My goal is just to have fun and get back into fitness," said Campos.

Participants started from the Cesar Chavez Student Center following three laps around campus. Prizes were given out to the winners in each of the three competing groups.

A family of three dominated the event earning one second place and two first place medals.

They say preparation was their key to success.

"We had a good night's sleep last night," said Kira Donnell.

"We practiced," said Paisley Sathe.

"Stretched out this morning, got warm," said Amul Sathe. "Wore lots of layers because it was really cold outside."

Participants enjoyed food and drinks handed out by volunteers after crossing the finish line.

The next race will be held in April 2025.
