California farm-to-food bank program to shut down amid federal funding cuts

A California farm-to-food bank program is running out of money due to federal funding cuts

The Local Food Purchase Assistance Program launched two years ago. It buys food from California farmers to supply local food banks and has supported over 800 farms statewide.

But the program could come to an end after a $48 million federal cut to their federal funding.

Evan Wiig is with the Community Alliance with Family Farmers. He says the Bay Area will get its last few deliveries of food by the end of the month.

"It’s been a real tough blow. The cooperatives that have developed out of this program are questioning how and how they’re going to be able to adapt and continue," Wiig said. "A lot of the farmers were really starting to rely on these funds as part of their business models."

Wiig says there are efforts to continue the program using state funds.
