RIPLEY, W. Va. (WCHS) — Covered in red, white and blue, Ripley, W. Va., launched the first day of America's Largest Small Town Independence Day celebration on Tuesday.
The Fourth of July event includes a parade, carnival, food for sale and free concerts all throughout the week.
The town's festival dates back to the late 1800s. But this year will be special with a new addition, said Ripley Mayor Carolyn Rader.
"We'll have hot air balloons this year," said Rader. "It's over at the Starcher Mansion in the west end of town between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m."
Veterans and local figures of the community will be recognized and honored in ceremonies throughout the week.
The event ends on Saturday, July 6 with a concert at the Constellium Stage.
